IN HOPE OF A BETTER LIFE: A survivor-led inquiry into the lived experiences of exploited Kenyan migrants
Introduction
Kenya is a country in East Africa which has an estimated population of 57.8 million people, projected to reach 63.1 million by 2030 (Worldometer, UN Population Division 2025). Kenya’s State Department for Labour reports that 7.4% of the population is unemployed, among whom 85% are below 35 years of age. In Kenya, unemployment and underemployment have become widespread challenges resulting from rapid population growth, slow economic growth, and rigid systems within the Kenyan labour market. High unemployment and poor socio-economic and environmental conditions in the country have driven many Kenyans to seek better opportunities outside the country’s borders (Kenya State Department for Labour and Skills Development 2022).

Jafari Jata Solution Report Dec 2024
Problem Statement/Gap Analysis
Kenya remains a Tier 2 country in the 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report. Despite notable efforts to combat human trafficking, significant challenges persist. These include limited adult victim protection services, over-reliance on civil society for survivor support, inadequate screening mechanisms, and persistent concerns about official complicity in trafficking crimes. Jafari Jata Solution (JJS-Kenya) aims to address these critical gaps through focused efforts in creating awareness, offering referrals, conducting research, and advocacy initiatives.
